What do people do after work with Ruta Pulkauninkaite-Macike

Ruta Pulkauninkaite-Macike is a general manager at Hotel Pacai.

What do people do after work goes hand in hand with staying happy while taking steps towards your dream career. Life is about finding a sweet balance between everyday efforts and fun experiences that help us grow and be happier.

We asked Rūta what are her favorite activities to do after work, what hobbies she has, and how they fulfill her work-life balance.

-what do people do?: ”What are your hobbies? How did you discover them?”

Rūta: My favourite hobby is surfing. It started naturally 7 years ago when we decided to move to Bali for 1 year. Bali is famous as a surfer‘s paradise. Me and my husband are active water sports lovers (we have been kitesurfing and wakeboarding for many years) thus surfing seemed like the next step in our sports package.

Water sports clear my mind and thoughts, that’s why I call it meditation, an escape from corporate life and contrast from what I am doing daily. At the same time, surfing develops skills that are needed for business life

-what do people do?: “How does it fulfill your work-life balance? Does it make you develop any skills/qualities that help you beat the odds in your personal and professional life?”

Rūta: Being a general manager means a lot of responsibilities, decision-making, and lots of creativity. When you are „on board“, you don‘t think about the budget, ideas, or corporate decisions – water sports clear my mind and thoughts, that‘s why I call it meditation, an escape from corporate life and contrast from what I am doing daily. At the same time, surfing develops skills that are needed for business life. In the water you have to commit fully to your actions, if you start hesitating you will find yourself in trouble. Same in business – you have a goal, a plan and you just go for it.

Pushing yourself to the extreme, continuously learning, analysing, improving, always looking two steps ahead, and never giving up – all of this fits both surfing and business.
